Alder cones perform a function very similar to Indian almond leaves. When used in aquaria, these cones release tannins into the water. Tannins are know for their healing and anti-fungal properties. In isopod enclosures, they act as a food source and hiding place for small and juvenile isopods. One oz approximates about 40 to 50 cones.
Note: Alder cones may be confused with pine cones due to their similar look. Alder cones come from the deciduous alder tree. Pine cones stem from coniferous trees. Never use wood, leaves, or seeds from coniferous trees in your enclosures or aquaria.
