Porcellio flavomarginatus are an absolutely wonderful isopod that can get up to 1 inch. Being native to the Mediterranean, they are considered one of the ‘giant terrestrial isopods’ from that region. Unlike most isopods, they like it very dry, Our ‘sphagnum moss hydration station’ only covers about 10% of our bins, compared to 30 to 50% for most isopods. Most of the enclosure for Porcellio flavomarginatus is bone dry.
What is wonderful about these is that they seem to be completely diurnal and just don’t seem to hide at all.
Flavomarginatus means ‘yellow border’, but the isopod available in the hobby shows a striking contrast of black and white with no yellow. It does not have a common name, but we can’t help but call them Rorschach isopod. We’ll see if that ever gets traction 🙂

We received our isopods quickly and well-packed. They were the best price I could find them, so I was pleasantly surprised by their size and got two free extra isopods.
