Armadillidium klugii 'Montenegro' is a robust species of isopod that enjoys warmer temperatures and can tolerate a somewhat drier environment. These so-called Montenegro clowns stay a little smaller, about 0.5 inch, and are very prolific in our experience (despite being often considered a harder-to-keep species). Allowing them to self-regulate by providing a humid area and a very dry area is key. If our Isopod Lodge setup instructions are followed, they will do great. We observe them crawling on the substrate and decor quite boldly. Their striking red skirts and white and yellow dots make for a very enjoyable display isopod.
We've noticed Armadillidium klugii are much more interested in rotting wood and leaves than they are in fruit and protein. We suggest to limit the amount of fresh food to avoid mold or seed the enclosure with springtails to eat food leftovers.
